Now Esperanza feels more free and views the world with more opportunities than before. This is because it says “And the front door is so swollen you have to push hard to get in.” This line portrays the idea that she feels trapped in this place and she can’t easily get out without having to do some heavy pushing. In the vignette “ The House on Mango Street” the “Swollen door” is a symbol of her struggles. It is a poetic metaphor to show how she feels stuck, suffocated, and unable to leave the place.
